Jaylib
Champion Sound
Champion Sound is the 2003 collaborative album by the hip-hop duo Jaylib, featuring producers and MCs J Dilla (from Detroit) and Madlib (from Los Angeles).
The project began when DJ J Rocc of the Beat Junkies gave a CD of J Dilla's unused beats to Madlib. Madlib recorded vocals over them and, without intending to release them, labeled the CD "Jaylib." When Stones Throw released one of these tracks as a single, Dilla heard it and suggested they create a formal project.
The album was created remotely, with the two artists sending beats to one another between Detroit and Los Angeles. Half the songs feature Dilla rapping over Madlib's production, and the other half feature Madlib rapping over Dilla's beats.
